ISRAEL 1970 SPIEGLER retro shirt: On June 3, 1964, Israel hit the target. After losing two consecutive Asian Nations Cup finals (1956, 1960), the Israeli team finally won the trophy. A consecration for the team of striker Mordechai Spiegler, prophet in his country, and future player of Paris FC (1973) and PSG (1974). A few years later, in 1969, the Israelis managed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time, taking advantage in particular of North Korea’s refusal to face them during the qualifications. In Mexico, Israel is not going to demerit, on the contrary. After a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay, Scheffer’s team clinches their first point against Sweden (1-1, Spiegler’s goal, of course). But the real feat took place on June 11, with this 0-0 snatch against Italy, future finalist. Insufficient to pass the round, but sufficient to reap the honors.
