HUNGARY 1954 PUSKAS retro jersey: Master of the Hungarian 50’s team, Ferenc Puskás became legendary one evening in November 1953 at Wembley. On that day, the Hungarians defeated the English (6-3) who had never lost their history at home to a “foreign” team in the United Kingdom. Strengthened by a series of four years of invincibility, Puskás and his band thus presented themselves at the Mondial 54. Longest favorites, they won their first two games 9-0 and 8-3. Injured, Puskás misses the quarter and the semi-finals, but is put on his feet for the final against the FRG. A final that should have been the highlight of his career. But the Germans, yet led 2-0 after 8 minutes, manage to win 3-2. Puskás may be voted best player in the tournament (he would have been Golden Ball if the distinction had existed), his regrets not having won this World Cup will be eternal.
