USSR CCCP 1964 YASHIN retro jersey: On May 27, 1964, on the occasion of the return quarter-final of the Euro against Sweden, Lev Yashine received the 1963 Ballon d’Or. Curiosity, that day, when he defends the cages of the USSR, Yashine wears the jersey of his club, Dynamo Moscow: a black tunic, with a “D” embroidered on it. He will also endorse it in the victorious semi-final against Denmark (3-0) and in the lost final against Spain (1-2). If it is not possible to be 100% sure, it would seem that this choice to display the “D” of Dynamo in the national team is political. Dynamo Sport, which owned all the Dynamos of the USSR (Dynamo Moscow, Dynamo Kiev, Dynamo Tbilisi, etc.), was then the business of the political police (future KGB). Now, we are a little more than a year after the Cuban missile crisis, and even if relations between the USSR and the United States tend to calm down, the Soviet Union does not miss the least opportunity to show its omnipresence. Putting this “D” on Yashine, then the sporting symbol of Soviet power, was a great political message to say, “We are there, we control everything.” This message is all the stronger since this Euro 1964 took place in Spain, with General Franco. Not really the best friend of the Soviets.
